Crews Clean, Repair Heard Elementary for Hours

While kids at Bibb county's Heard Elementary had the day off, clean-up crews reported to school and spent the entire day on repairs.

The area on Vinson Road was crippled from Tuesday morning's storm.

Clean-up crews spent the day turning the mess of downed trees into wood chips.

"These two limbs right here, they fell this way," describes the district's Risk Management Director, David Gowan.

Gowan says, Tuesday, after roof damages, water leaks, and fallen trees, Heard Elementary hung a "school canceled" sign.

He says fallen limbs destroyed a $4 thousand air conditioning unit outside a portable classroom.

"You can see structurally that the portable, thankfully, is still in good condition," says Gowan.

But on Vinson Road, Heard Elementary wasn't the only thing in the storm's path.

Right across the street from the school, at Liberty United Methodist Church, several trees were completely uprooted.

My Teacher is Tops

After working as a teachers' assistant for 20 years, Opal Taylor says she wanted to do more in the classroom.

Two years ago, she says she followed her calling and started teaching third grade at McKibben Lane Elementary School.

"I do everything that's possible in order for them to become successful learners," Taylor said.

Taylor's students say her personality sets her apart.

"She is a fun and a good excellent teacher," Rashod Phillips said.

"She gives us songs and games that we can play to learn," Shiykirriah Burney said.

Taylor says she incorporates cheers to make learning effective and exciting.

"She is the best teacher in the world," Clay Butcher said.

"She's a great third grade teacher she should teach all of the grades," Shaelondra White said.

Macon Woman Dies After Van-Truck Accident

A Macon woman died Tuesday morning, one week after the van she was riding in was struck by a tractor-trailer truck.

Bibb County coroner Leon Jones says 31-year-old Phyllis Michele Mossman died around 6:45 a.m. at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

She suffered multiple fractures in the March 29 accident on Millerfield Road.

A Macon police news release said Mossman was riding in a van driven by Terry Whitehead when it stalled and began coasting. It was struck from behind by a Mack truck driven by 57-year-old Jonnie White.

Two other women in the van also suffered serious injuries.

No one has been charged in the accident.

Minor Spill Reported

270 gallons of water was discharged into a ditch feeding the Ocmulgee River Sunday.

A Macon Water Authority news release says the cause of the spill was grease.

"There are no commercial grease sources upstream from this location and residential grease is not regulated," the release says.

Debris was removed from the surrounding area as well as the area that was affected.

The line will be cleaned and will be added to the weekly "hot spot" inspection list, a Macon Water Authority news release says.
