Students at Bibb County's Alexander II Elementary School lugged gallons of water instead of books Wednesday to raise money for Winn's Well Project.
Started by Springdale Elementary School third grader Winn Murray, the project aims to build wells in water-scarce regions of Africa.
Murray says, "I really wanted to make a big difference and help save some lives"
He learned about the clean-water crisis in class. His ideas caught on at other schools.
Winn's teacher Michelle Gowan says, "As adults, if we can't solve the whole problem, we often don't do anything. But a child is not deterred by the fact that he can't do the whole thing. He just thought that whatever he does would be more than nothing, and I think that is what stands out about Winn."
Gowan says since he started early this month, hundreds have joined in.
