Tanis Leads Mercer Past FAMU

Coming off its first three-game losing streak in almost a full calendar year, the Mercer baseball team returned to the winners circle with a 9-4 win over Florida A&M on Monday evening at Claude Smith Field.

It was a memorable night of sorts as two Mercer players set significant career milestones in the victory. Junior Billy Burns had a stolen base in the game to give him 50 career steals while classmate Jacob Tanis had an RBI single in the first inning to give 150 career runs batted in.

The Mercer offense wasted no time getting on the board, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 5-1 lead. Tanis' RBI single, a two-RBI single by sophomore Travis Benn, an RBI groundout by freshman Derrick Workman and an error accounted for the five runs in the frame.

Pollen Season is Busy Season at Car Wash

It's that time of year again when Central Georgians are waking up to a layer of yellow.

But for a local car wash, it's the best time of year.

People across Macon are rolling through the suds to clear off a layer of yellow.

"It was as if it was raining, and then all the pollen came and just dragged across my car. It was, like, completely yellow," says Frosti Smith.

"It was like yellow snow," says another car wash visitor.

The yellow "snow" drifted through the air Monday afternoon, making a home on many people's cars.

"A pollen problem? We like it," says Fountain Car Wash owner, Chuck Duggan.

He says this time every year, the cars roll in.

Third Street Park Activities Kick Off

Cherry Blossom Festivities are in full swing, including the Third Street Park Festival that kicked off on Monday.

Hundreds cooled off with free Mayfield Ice Cream and Cokes while they enjoyed live music and carriage rides.

Five-year-old twins Anna and Ethan Hill, anxiously waited for their turn to ride in the carriage.

Anna even wore her princess dress for the occasion, but this isn't their first ride around the park

Ethan says, "We have rided it before." Anna says, "Last spring we rode it."

Other kids focused their attention to the pink treat of the day: cherry ice cream.

A Mayfield representative says they usually serve about 2,500 ice cream cones and use about 90 gallons of cherry ice cream.

Al Bacon, who is from Reynolds, Ind., says, "Anything that's free is great, especially if you're retired."

ATLANTA (March 21, 2011)— Governor Nathan Deal and the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office, a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), designated 73 Georgia counties Camera Ready at the Georgia State Capitol today. The state’s Camera Ready Community Program was launched as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to bolster Georgia’s growing film and television industry.

“We have experienced a significant increase in jobs, investment, infrastructure and film induced tourism, making Georgia’s entertainment industries among the state’s fastest growing sectors,” said GDEcD commissioner Chris Cummiskey. “The statewide response has been tremendous from Georgia counties that want to become Camera Ready in order to help bring jobs and investments to their local communities.”
