Postal Service Cutting 56 Jobs in Macon

The U.S. Postal Service says it's eliminating 56 jobs by closing a regional office in Macon.

This will affect the South Georgia district office at 451 College St., but not the main Macon post office in the same building, said spokeswoman Nancy Ross. That post office will remain open.

The closing is part of a national effort by the postal service to get leaner and cut costs, due to a drastic drop in mail use.

Ross says the 56 jobs will be eliminated over a four-month period. Some employees who qualify will be offered early retirement and the service will try to find new jobs for others.

The South Georgia district office manages post offices in Central and South Georgia and part of South Carolina, Ross said. Another regional office will pick up its duties.

The postal service says the change will not affect customer service, mail delivery, post office operations or ZIP codes.

Harlem Globetrotter Entertains Macon Students

The Wildcats of Ingram-Pye Elementary got a little wild Wednesday when a Harlem Globetrotter named Hot Shot came to entertain the kids.

Hot Shot Branch and Mayor Robert Reichert visited to talk about building a healthy mind and body, staying in school, and responsibility.

The visit was just in time to give the kids a pep talk before their CRCT testing.

Hot Shot told the kids it took a lot of hard work and determination for him to make it as a professional basketball player, and he encouraged them to be just as dedicated.

"I'm sure it brightened their day up, you know, for us to come in and enjoy this special day with them and motivate them for the upcoming test," Hot Shot said.

Students laughed and applauded when Hot Shot showed off his signature tricks.

"He was doing the tricks, throwing the ball behind his back. I want to be like him when I grow up," said fifth-grader Jonas Walker.
