Changes in the Works for Bowden Golf Course

Macon Parks and Recreation Director Dale 'Doc' Dougherty says he has a plan to make Bowden Golf Course profitable again.

The first step was bringing some upgrades to the city-owned golf course. Now, he says he needs to stop the course from bleeding money.

He says it loses about $130,000 a year.

He told the Macon City Council Community Resources and Development Committee Tuesday night about the next phase of his plan for Bowden, which involves restructuring the pricing options.

Previously, Dougherty says, visitors have only had two options-- an annual membership, or a daily fee.

He says that's not keeping Bowden competitive with other private clubs in the area.

The proposal to restructure pricing is two-fold. There will be some slight modifications to daily charges for things like golf cart rentals.

Sheriff: Bibb Court Needs Security Upgrades

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says it brings more than 7,000 inmates a year to court appearances.

The increase in numbers led Sheriff Jerry Modena to try to improve security at the court.

At the Bibb County Courthouse, visitors walk through a metal detector and have their bags scanned for weapons. It's all to ensure the safety of everyone inside, including prisoners.

Modena says the number of inmates they move has increased in the last few years.

He says, "With the amount that we that we were bringing in and out of this courthouse, we talked about up in to the thousands or more during a year's period, that we needed to update our security."

According to Commissioner Bert Bivins last week's escape by two inmates while being transported to court, highlighted the need for more security.
