Deal Names 3 Members to Music Hall Board

Governor Nathan Deal has named three people, two of them Central Georgians, to the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame Authority.

They will replace three members from the Macon area.

The Music Hall of Fame Authority is the state board that's supposed to decide this spring whether to keep the museum in Macon or move it to another town.
The three new members are:

  • Rose Lane Leavell of Twiggs County, wife of musician Chuck Leavell and also an activist and longtime tree farmer.
  • Timothy Stapleton of Macon, an orthopedic doctor, and
  • Charley Humbard of Atlanta, CEO of the Gospel Music Channel.

The governor's office says they'll fill three vacant spots, and bring the board back up to nine members.

Music Hall of Fame Executive Director Lisa Love says Kirby Godsey and Stephen Simpson's terms both expired on February 1.

Gas Prices Leave Drivers Fuming

The price of a gallon of gas is continuing to climb at the pump, and that has drivers fuming.

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gas was $3.43 on Monday, the same price as Sunday.

That's nearly a $.50 hike since this time a month ago.

Jason Hinkle was filling up his Ford sedan on Monday night at a gas station on Gray Highway in Macon.

He says he's tired of watching the price rise a the pump.

"Tuesday it was $3.09, the next Friday it was $3.17 and now it's sitting at $3.45," complained Hinkle.  "It's just too high."

He says he bought his car about two months ago.

"The day I got it I spent about $37 to fill it up."

Man Rescues Roommate From House Fire

One of the boarders caught in a house fire Sunday rescued one of his housemates from the blaze.

Both men escaped but lost all of their belongings. The house caught fire around 5 a.m. Sunday. Wyatt Keene, who owns and runs the rooming house, says tenant Jerome Glover woke up smelling smoke and crawled through the home making sure everybody was out.

Keene says Glover found another tenant disoriented in his bedroom and led him out of the burning building.

Keene says Glover had to be taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Assistant Chief Cliff Rushin says the fire started in the kitchen. Keene says one tenant had a history of leaving the stove on and he thinks that's how the fire started. He says the building is a total loss but glad none of the tenants were harmed.

Keene says six people lived at the house but the two men were the only ones home when the fire happened.
