President Carter, Wife Honor 'Miss Lillian'

President Jimmy Carter and former first lady, Rosalynn, attended a ceremony at Wesleyan College Thursday afternoon, honoring the woman who was perhaps the country's best-known "first mother."

Lillian Carter, recognized in the late 70's as America's "favorite grandmother," and perhaps best-known as "Miz Lillian," earned one more title.

In a ceremony, Thursday morning, President Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalynn accepted a Georgia Women of Achievement Award in honor of the late Mrs. Carter.

Rosalynn, the keynote speaker, says her spunk made Miss Lillian a household name.

"You never knew what she was going to say," says Carter.

Rosalynn Carter, a Plains native like her husband, says she spent much of her childhood at the Carter house; she was best friends with Jimmy's younger sister, Ruth.

Carter says, the times never changed Miss Lillian, not even Jimmy's presidency.

Nearly Six Months After Death, Man Still Unidentified

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones says he recently got a ruling from the county's attorney on an unidentified man found dead outside the Medical Center of Central Georgia nearly six months ago.

The attorney advised Jones to reach out to the media to get the word out and then get burial plans underway.

In his 21 years with the Bibb Coroner's Office, Jones says he's never held a body this long.

"Usually just a couple days," said Jones.

The man's body was found dead on Sept. 23, according to a Macon police report.  Since then, Jones says they've struggled to track down who he is and notify family.

"We have never been able to find the next of kin on this gentleman, we got the Mexican consulate involved, the Hispanic newspaper involved," he said.

The body was at the GBI's crime lab until Feb. 18, while GBI authorities worked to identify him, Jones said, then it was turned over to Bibb County.

Bibb and City of Macon Agree on SPLOST Plan

Bibb County and city of Macon leaders have agreed to seek a SPLOST this November to pay for recreation improvements.
If voters approve the sales-tax increase, they say, the county will take over management of recreation facilities in all of Bibb County.

It's part of a wide-ranging plan to redefine which services are provided by the city and which by the county.

Mayor Robert Reichert and County Commission Chairman Sam Hart announced the plan Thursday morning.

Alaska [Self-Titled]

When I say “guitar-driven instrumental rock,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind? These days it’s usually something akin to Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, or even more ambient-minded groups like This Will Destroy You. You know what I’m talking about. Quiet, noodly guitar-riff enhanced by a ton of delay.

Slow introduction of second guitar along with bass and drums. Tension mounts, distortion becomes more intense. Climactic, repeated guitar lines as the song reaches its triumphant crescendo. Rinse. Repeat. It’s a pretty common formula these days. There’s nothing wrong with it, but you have to admit, it’s a bit overdone.

Jobless Rate Up in Macon, Steady In Warner Robins

New numbers from the Georgia Department of Labor show that Macon's unemployment rate rose to 10.5% in the month on January.

The new numbers show Macon's unemployment rate increased from 10.2% in December. The release from the Department of Labor says layoffs in retail trade, construction, administrative and support services are to blame for the increase.

In Warner Robins the unemployment rate remained at 7.8% from December to January, says the release.

The Department of Labor says unemployment increased in all areas of the state in January except in Warner Robins. Of the 25 local areas, Warner Robins had the lowest January jobless rate at 7.8%.

January marked the 40th consecutive month that Georgia has exceeded the national unemployment rate, which is currently at 9%.

Teacher Funds Classroom Material Through DonorsChoose.org

Recently, Vineville Academy Strings Teacher Patricia Baser had her fifth project funded through the website DonorsChoose.org: 47 single strings and 25 sets of violin, viola, and cello strings in various sizes. The $1,091 project was completely funded on February 25, 2011.

“The success of these string projects is a direct reflection of the value people across the country place on access to music education such as that available at Vineville Academy,” says Mrs. Baser.
