Cemetery Land Use Hearing Draws Crowd

A judge continued a hearing Tuesday on whether to let the Georgia Department of Transportation take part of Riverside Cemetery.

More than 40 people showed up to hear the state's plans to use the cemetery land for road expansion.

Brad Hale, and engineer for the project says, "I'm not going to get into
every issue of the project. I could talk for hours about it, but I'll
focus on the parts that cause us to have to have these ramps that are
close to getting on to the cemetery property."

They plan to use about 8,000 square feet of cemetery space for the Interstate 16-Interstate 75 project, but they say no graves would be affected.

The DOT said the land would be used to expand access to the interstate.

Hale says, "What we're proposing to do is what we call a collector/distributor roadway which is basically like an access road."

Part of that road would cut through Riverside Cemetery.

Corrections officers Christopher Hall, Ronald Lach, Derrick Wimbush, Willie Redden, Darren Douglass Griffin, Kerry Bolden, and Delton Rushin were arrested after a GBI investigation and each face one count of aggravated battery and one count of violating their oaths.
