Springdale Parents Petition Against Class Size Process

by Katelyn Heck, 13WMAZ.com

Two Springdale Elementary parents brought 300 petitions to the Bibb County school board Thursday.

They said they want the board to stop using a district-wide average to determine class sizes.

Instead, the parents are urging board members to consider each school's numbers separately. This, they say, would reduce uneven class sizes throughout the school system.

Board president Wanda West asked the two parents to meet with district administrators to discuss their concerns further.

Bibb School Board Delays '45/15' Calendar

by Katelyn Heck, 13WMAZ.com

STORY HIGHLIGHTS:

- The Bibb school board put off a move to a "year-round" -- 45 days on, 15 days off -- schedule in Thursday's meeting.

- About two-thirds of the district's 900 employees opposed the 45/15 calendar, according to an internal survey.

- The board will reconsider the move in February 2014.

The Bibb County school board pushed back a move to a 45/15 calendar at Thursday night's meeting.

In that set-up, students would go to school for 45 days, then have three weeks off.

Deputy Superintendent Jane Drennan says the district administration advised them against it for a few reasons.

The first is a $56,000 hike in utility bills, mainly due to running the air conditioning during the hot summer months.

Also, the district surveyed around 900 employees, and roughly two-thirds of them were against the 45/15 calendar.

Mercer Baseball Team Makes History

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The No. 28 Mercer baseball team set a new program record for most wins in a single-season following a 7-4 series opening victory over Northern Kentucky on Thursday afternoon at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.

Mercer (40-14, 18-7 A-Sun) has now won eight out of its last 10 games overall and is just the 12th team in the nation to eclipse the 40-win barrier this season.

The win keeps the Bears in first place in the Atlantic Sun Cofnerence with two regular season games left to play.

Walk-off Slam Fells GC Bobcats

Having rebounded from an early six-run hole Thursday in the 2013 NCAA Southeast Regional, the No. 25 Georgia College baseball team (33-18) was felled in the bottom of the ninth inning on a walk-off grand slam by No. 3 USC Aiken (42-11), 11-7.

The Bobcats now fall to the losers' bracket in the double elimination tournament.

USCA, the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Regular-Season Champions, put up runs in each of the first three innings to take an early 6-0 lead. Georgia College responded in the fourth with a four-run inning, as a Cody Maas sacrifice fly was followed by a two-run double from Mikee Moore and an RBI single by Rob Hogenkamp.

The Bobcats knotted it up at 6-6 in the fifth, when Maas ripped a single to center that was mishandled by the Pacer centerfielder, plating two runs.
