'Click It Or Ticket' Begins Today

Even more than usual, cops are hunting Georgia's roads today for people who aren't wearing their seat belts.

That's because today is the kick-off for the national "Click It or Ticket" campaign.

State officials with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety are reminding you that your local cops, Sheriff's offices, and the Georgia State Patrol will be on an increased lookout for drivers and passengers who aren't wearing their seat belts.

Officials say the campaign is an effort to save lives.

In 2011, the state of Georgia had 421 traffic deaths that involved a victim who wasn't wearing a seat belt.

This year, the state is on track to see more than 400 of those deaths in 2013.

If they catch you without your seat belt, you could get a ticket and face a hefty fine.

Locally Grown Goods Showcased at Macon Farmers Market

Vendors and Central Georgians gathered at the Macon State Farmers Market Saturday morning off of Eisenhower Parkway.

People were able to find fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and even olive oil, all made in the Peach State.

"We want to bring pride back to Georgia, " said Happy Wyatt, manager of Macon State Farmers Market. "We have got so many wonderful commodities here. You can get a little bit of everything here."

Dickey Farms was one of the venders to set up shop at the farmers market. They offered peach bread, peach ice cream, and of course, the first peaches of the season.

"When we all woke up this morning, the peaches were on the tree," said Steven Lewis of  Dickey Farms. "They haven't been in cargo containers shipped across the sea. I mean what you're getting, it would be just the same as if you walked into your backyard and just plucked it off the tree. That is the epitome of freshness."

State Gets Grant to Promote Safe Boating

ATLANTA (AP) - Department of Natural Resources officials say Georgia was one of 14 recipients of a grant to help promote National Safe Boating Week.

Department spokeswoman Melissa Cummings says the agency will use the $3,400 grant to produce banners, signs and other materials promoting water safety during National Safe Boating Week, which runs May 18 to 24.

Cummings says conservation rangers with the Department of Natural Resources will encourage boaters to wear life jackets, establish float plans, stay sober and follow other safe boating regulations.

Cummings says about 88 percent of people who drowned in 2010 were not wearing life jackets.
