Smoking Ban Stays Off Macon Council Agenda

A law that would ban smoking in many public places did not make it onto the Macon City Council's agenda Tuesday night.

On Monday night sponsors of the ordinance said they planned to try and overrule the decision of the Ordinances and Resolutions Committee to keep the law off council's agenda.

But ordnance co-sponsor Nancy White says with qualifying going on this week supporters decided to hold off.

Macon City Council Appoints New Member

Macon City Council  voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Jaime Cay Kaplan to the Post 3 Ward 5 seat Tuesday night.

Kaplan is the second person appointed to fulfill the unexpired term of former councilman Erick Erickson, who resigned in February.

Council first appointed Beverly Blake, but she resigned last month after she moved out of the ward.

Kaplan, a former tennis pro, currently coaches at Stratford Academy.

She says she's looking forward to getting started.

Village Green Could Get Police Substation

Macon City Council plans to consider a resolution to put a police substation in the Village Green neighborhood, according to councilman Ed DeFore.

Councilmen DeFore, James Timley and Mike Cranford sponsored the resolution, which may be discussed in Public Safety Committee meetings next week.

DeFore says he spoke to Macon Police Chief Mike Burns, and Burns called it a "good idea."

So far the idea is still in the planning stages. DeFore says he'd like to have at least one police officer patrolling the area at all times.

Instead of building a substation, DeFore says they would operate out of a neighborhood home which they would convert.

DeFore says the people of Village Green need help to force crime from their neighborhood.

He says about six years ago the police force arranged to have an officer rent a home in the neighborhood for $1 a year. DeFore says he believes crime improved as a result.

Thirteen Qualify for City Offices

Thirteen Democrats qualified Monday for office in this year's city elections.

None of the announced Republican candidates stepped forward on Monday, the first day of qualifying.

But two Democratic mayoral hopefuls and 11 council contestants signed the necessary paperwork and paid their qualifying fees to become official candidates.

Former Mayor C. Jack Ellis, accompanied by his wife Tishangi, arrived at the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections about 9:30 a.m.

Ellis said bringing jobs and reducing crime would be top issues in his campaign. He also said Reichert hasn't worked with the private sector to bring jobs here.

"This mayor has been laying people off. He hasn't been creating jobs, he's been firing people. So how do you think that your are eligible or qualified to create all the jobs when you don't even know how to creat a job to keep your own work force happy?" Ellis said.
