Commissioners Approve Budget With Tax Hike

Bibb County Commissioners approved an $83.5 million budget that includes a two-mill tax hike.

The vote, taken Tuesday morning,  was three to two.  Commissioner Joe Allen switched positions and joined Commissioner Lonzy Edwards in voting against the fiscal year 2012 budget.

"I was just not happy with the final pages of the budget, and I just couldn't bring myself to vote yes," Allen said.

Commissioners voting for the budget were Chairman Sam Hart Sr., Elmo Richardson and Bert Bivins.

The two-mill tax hike means an additional $80 a year for people who own property with a tax value of $100,000.

The new fiscal year begins July 1.

Macon Council Members Want to Limit Door-to-Door Sales

Tuesday's Macon City Council agenda includes a resolution that puts stricter requirements on businesses that sell their product door-to-door, but one city councilman says members don't plan to discuss it tonight.

According to the Macon city clerk's office, Ward I council members Rick Hutto, Lonnie Miley, and Elaine Lucas sponsored the resolution.

Hutto said Tuesday they plan to pull the item from council's appropriations agenda, and resubmit the proposal in two weeks, after it can be rewritten. Hutto says that's at the request of the city attorney, to make sure the law applies to both sections of Macon's charter.

Hutto says as the current law stands, in Macon door-to-door solicitors are required to have a business permit with the city.

He says this resolution would require door-to-door salesmen also obtain a separate solicitor's permit, too.

Beware of the Humidity!

Heat and humidity are the two “H’s” that get us in the summertime. In fact, the combination can be downright unbearable. Need some proof? Well here you go… 95° compared with a 70° dew point feels like 105°!! You can check out other temperature and dew point combinations on the heat index chart.

The humidity can be deceiving though! My husband and I were about to go to the gym yesterday afternoon when I decided we should run around the neighborhood since it wasn’t raining and temperatures were only in the 70s (the reasons we were that “mild” at 2pm were the clouds and previous rain).

About a quarter of a mile into the run, I realized that it may not be hot but it was incredibly steamy. I think I sweat more than I ever have on a run!

Markets now accepting debit, credit, and EBT!

Community Health Works announces that credit cards, debit cards and EBT cards will now be accepted at Macon’s Mulberry Street Market and Warner Robins International City Farmers Market.

Market patrons can visit the Community Health Works table where cards will be swiped and redeemed with tokens accepted by vendors. For those who are using EBT cards as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, i.e. SNAP, every dollar token will be doubled in value by a grant from Wholesome Wave Georgia (Double Value Coupon Program), which benefits both small food producers and vulnerable consumers in Macon and Warner Robins by making wholesome, locally grown food more accessible.

This new system will debut at the Mulberry Street Market, from 4 to 7 p.m., in front of the Grand Opera House, on Wednesday, June 29, and at the International City Farmers Market, on Thursday, June 30, from 2 to 6 p.m., at the SW corner of Watson Blvd. and S. Davis Dr.
