Brown Questions Truth in Mayor's Job Ad

Political sparks flew Thursday between Macon Mayor Robert Reichert and one of his challengers.

State Sen. Robert Brown accused Reichert of taking credit for bringing jobs into the area that Brown says don't exist.

Reichert accused Brown of making false accusations against Reichert without checking the facts.

The heated comments stemmed from the content of a political ad that Reichert's running on Macon TV stations.

In the ad, Reichert said he's made it a priority during his first term to bring "high-quality, high-paying" jobs to Macon.

That didn't sit well with Brown, who says he didn't recognize the building under construction behind Reichert in the advertisement. Brown said it certainly wasn't in the city.

So Brown called a morning news conference to denounce the ad and challenge Reichert to a debate.

"The only place he's had an impact on jobs is where he has increased the salaries of his top staff," Brown said.

Three people were taken to a local hospital after an accident on I-75 north Thursday morning.
It happened near mile marker 179, opposite the state rest area,  according Allison Selman Willis of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. That's near the Bibb-Monroe county line and the I-75-475 split.

Georgia Farm Group Prays for Rain

Farmers, preachers and politicians joined to pray for better weather for Georgia Thursday afternoon.

The Georgia Farm Bureau, which represents the state's farmers, held a prayer service for better weather, at its Bass Road headquarters in north Macon.

About 75 people were there.

Glenn Waller and his wife have farmed in Washington County for 48 years.

He said, "We just work all the time. Don't take any vacations. We haven't had a vacation in five years."

They made the drive to Macon to join with farmers from across the state to raise their voices for rain.

Waller said, "The most trying thing you depend on is rain on a farm. If you do everything else and you don't get water you're in trouble."

South Georgia farmer Tim Burch said conditions in Baker County are the worst he's seen in 35 years. He said the last measurable rain came on April 1.

EPA Says Macon's Air is Cleaner

A federal agency says Macon's air is cleaner nowadays.

The Environmental Protection Agency says air around the city now meets federal standards for particulate matter. That means grit, dust, smoke and other tiny particles in the air.

They say those particles can get into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as lung and heart disease, heart attacks and asthma.

Charise Stephens of the Middle Georgia Clean Air Coalition says it's good news for the region. She says Central Georgia officials made the improvement by promoting biofuels, anti-idling laws, increased use of public transportation.

Though it is too late for online registration, walk-up registrations will be accepted at 5:30 pm on Monday for those with cash or cashier’s checks (no personal checks).

“The local community has really stepped up this year,” said community leader Keith Lauritsen. “Because of the great financial support, we can serve a full camp of 200 attendees between the ages of 7 and 13.” Local fundraising efforts allowed Kids and Pros to “scholarship” some young attendees who were not able to pay for the camp, according to Lauritsen.
