Celebrate the 4th Early...

“Ole Time Independence Day Celebration” comes a little early this year, on Saturday, July 2.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., living history demonstrations of old time crafts, pastimes and chores will be presented: music, blacksmithing, toys and games, woodstove cooking, and spinning, punctuated by blasts of the steam engine whistle.  At noon we’ll gather for a reading of the Declaration of Independence followed by celebratory competitions including sack race, three legged race, egg and spoon race, tug-of-war, and egg toss, topped off by watermelon eating.

The living history demonstrations will resume until the program ends at 3:30 p.m.  Self guided tours of the farm houses and mills will be ongoing throughout the day.

Today's Purge - Cookbooks

Today's Purge - Cookbooks

This summer I am trying to take advantage of some down time to declutter my own house. After having a discussion with my husband this weekend, we have decided our cookbook collection needs some serious purging.  Now don’t get me wrong, I love my cookbook collection as much as the next gal but my husband and I realized that we rarely ever refer to them anymore.

If we want a new recipe, we run the computer and browse AllRecipes.com or Food Network. If it’s a tried and true recipe that we love, it’s in my recipe card box.  There was a time when my husband loved to plan a holiday meal (yes, he really loves to cook but rarely has the time) with a stack of Southern Living cookbooks at his side, but that doesn’t happen anymore. He’s more likely to Google than browse.
