Macon-Bibb Firefighter Drowns Saving Kids

A Macon man drowned at Lake Tobesofkee after saving three children in the water, that's according to Sgt. Sean Defoe with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

The body of 24 year old Michael Dewayne Jones was found in the lake Saturday evening around 8 p.m.

Coroner Leon Jones says Michael Dewayne Jones was a Macon-Bibb County firefighter.  The coroner says Jones has been on working with the department for about two weeks.

Defoe says the kids were out in deep water, when they needed help. He says Jones and several other people went in to save them, and during that time the man drowned.

Defoe says the call came in around 6:45 p.m.  He says it is unclear if the Jones was related to the children.

The coroner says the kids were ages 5, 7 and 8.

Streaking Bears Blast ETSU

Billy Burns, Joe Winker, Jacob Tanis and John Moreland all hammered home runs as the Mercer Bears routed East Tennessee State Friday night 12-2.

The victory extended the Bears win streak to a season-high seven games and assued the Bears of finishing no worse than fourth in the Atlantic Sun regular season standings.

Mercer had already clinched a spot in next week's A-Sun tournament which the Bears won in 2010.

Justice French allowed only one run in five innings of work to get the win for the Bears.

Mercer and ETSU close out their series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Claude Smith Field.  It will be the final home game of the season for Mercer.

The A-Sun tournament starts next Thursday in Nashville, TN.
