Bicycles Built for Two Pedal Through Town

Over two hundred cyclists took to the roads of Central Georgia this weekend riding in pairs.

Cyclists from 15 different states made the trip for the Georgia Tandem Bike Rally. Siblings, couples and friends rode their two-seater bikes from Zebulon road to Lizella.

Riders had the option of two routes, a short 28 mile ride or a more scenic 48 mile trip to Lizella. Folks at the rally say tandem biking helps build team work between partners.

"When you are going up a hill and you are sweating and trying to get to the top you know you can rely on your team member to get you were you want to go," said Roger Strauss, Georgia Tandem Rally Ride director.

While bikers rested, they were able to check some of Macon's tourist spots like the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame and the Cannon Ball House.

In Memory Of Michael Dewayne Jones:A Real Hero

In Memory Of Michael Dewayne Jones:A Real Hero

I'm saddened today as I look across the street at the flag flying at half-mast. As it billows in the gentle breeze I think of the hero who is mourned at every firehouse in the community.

Michael Dewayne Jones,  a 24-year-old Macon-Bibb County firefighter gave his life last night to save three children who's ages are 5,7 and 8. They were swimming in deep water and needed help. Several people went to their rescue. Firefighter Jones drowned during the rescue. I honor him today as a hero. He is gone, but his actions will never be forgotten. Thank you Michael.

Failed Bank Reopens Under New Name

Atlantic Southern Bank branches reopened Saturday under a new name, to the relief of some Macon customers.

Kent Brown, of Macon, drove to the drive-up teller shortly after 9 a.m. to make sure he could deposit money, after hearing a recorded phone message Friday night that told him his bank had closed, he said.

"It was a little freaky," Brown said.

Federal officials took control of the Macon-based bank Friday evening because too many bad loans left it without enough money to operate.

"I thought well another one bites the dust," Michael Bradshaw, a Macon customer, said.

"It's surprising for this bank," Marcel Lundy, of Macon, said, "because it's a good bank and good employees and good people here."

Saturday, the bank opened branches at 8:30 a.m. under the new ownership of Certus Bank, an Easley, South Carolina-based company.

For those who prefer to bank smaller, it's a disappointing blow.

Police: Man Charged with Shooting Gun in City Limits

Macon Police say a man faces charges after he barricaded himself in a house and shot a weapon.

Police Officers and the SWAT Team were called to Rosen Avenue for a possible hostage situation around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday.

According to police, 38-year-old Oswald Walker barricaded himself in a house with a gun and threatened to kill himself.

Spokeswoman Jami Gaudet says SWAT team members and hostage negotiators worked to end the situation safely. They talked with Walker during the ordeal, but he continued to make threats to end his life and shoot officers.

Police says during the negotiations, shots were fired from the house.

Gaudet says Walker came out of the house around 8:15 p.m., but refused to comply with with officers' requests to put his hands behind his head.

Officers tased Walker, and transported him to the Medical Center of Central Georgia for an psychiatric evaluation.
