Child-Abuse Suspect Held Without Bond

A Bibb County man faces child cruelty charges for allegedly injuring a 3-month old.

A news release from the Bibb sheriff's office says Felix Medellin was arrested Wednesday afternoon.

On Sunday, his infant son was airlifted to Atlanta with head injuries.

Witnesses said Medellin was watching his son while his wife went to the store. He reportedly claimed that the child fell from his lap, but doctors in Atlanta said the head injuries did not match that, the release said.

He's now in the Bibb County jail. Sgt. Sean DeFoe of the sheriff's office says immigration agents have placed a hold on Medellin, who is from Mexico.

Medellin appeared before a magistrate judge Thursday afternoon and was held without bond.

A court appointed interpreter was there to explain the decision to Medellin.

Macon, Warner Robins Add Jobs

There's some good news in the job market.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 9.9 percent in April, down one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 10 percent in March.

According to numbers from the Department of Labor, Macon gained 1,000 jobs since April 2010, and Warner Robins added 400 jobs.

Initial jobless claims in Macon decreased about 21 percent over the past year, and were down about 8 percent in Warner Robins.

The state's jobless rate was 10.1 percent in April a year ago.

Butler said Thursday it's the first time in nearly two years that Georgia's unemployment has dipped below 10 percent.

He says it's also the third consecutive month of job growth in the state.

The last time the state's rate was below 10 percent was in June
2009, when it was 9.8 percent.

There were 3,834,100 payroll jobs in April, up by 30,100 from March.
