13WMAZ Surprises Two New Junior Journalists

We began our quest Friday morning with a stop at the Kinman Christian Academy in Macon.  That's housed at Victory Baptist Church on Houston Road.

13WMAZ Chief Meteorologist Ben Jones walked through the door with one goal in mind: find Hannah Williamson.  When Hannah saw Ben enter her classroom, she jumped out of her seat and screamed his name.  You see, this new Junior Journalist has a love for meteorology and Ben is her favorite anchor.

When asked why she'd make a good Junior Journalist, the 12-year-old excitedly said, "Because I want to be a chief meteorologist."

Before our crew left for the day, Hannah had a little piece of advice for Ben.  "Give me a ring whenever there is bad weather," she said.  She also demonstrated her ability to give a weather forecast.

The next stop on our agenda, Fort Valley Middle School.  That's where we found 11-year-old Hillary Fobbs-Glenn.

Bear Comes Calling at Macon's Fickling Building

The night watchman at downtown Macon's Fickling Building probably doesn't see too many visitors at 2 a.m.

Early Thursday, one came calling on four legs. Here's a still photo from the building's surveillance camera, taken around 2 Thursday morning.

Don Laurens, the Ficking Company's director of property management, says the watchman saw the black bear come to the door, near Mulberry and Second streets, but thought it was a dog.

When the watchman got closer, Laurens said, the bear ran away toward Second Street.

He says it all lasted about 10 seconds.

Black bears are common along the Ocmulgee River in Bibb County and areas south, but are seldom seen around the downtown area. They're considered harmless to humans.

Bibb BOE to Start Leadership Training

Less than a week after Bibb schools kicked off its summer reading program by handing out books to students, Superintendent  Romain Dallemand gave school board members an assignment of their own.

During a closed meeting at the school board's monthly committee meeting Thursday, school board member Lynn Farmer says Dallemand gave all eight members a copy of the book "Leading Change" by John P. Kotter.

"He did say it was our summer reading," Farmer said, "but I think he expects us to have it done in two weeks when we come to training."

Next month, the board begins governance training that Dallemand called for in his entry plan to the district.

"We are going to begin working as a board in training on leading change in the system and out role as a school board," Farmer said.

The Heat is On in Central Georgia!

The Heat is On in Central Georgia!

There is no doubt about it…it has been a hot week here in Central Georgia! We have been in the 90s every day so far and today will be no different. We hit 91 on Monday, 95 Tuesday and Wednesday, and had a record high of 96 yesterday. Brace yourself for lower 90s this afternoon...May I recommend a dip in the pool? :)

I know Georgia is supposed to be hot, but not this hot this early! The average high for the middle of May is 82 and even average highs in August are only in the lower 90s!

But don’t worry, I have good news! We’ll cool back down into the 80s over the weekend. On top of that, we have a good chance of rain tomorrow. The only down side is that we could have some strong to severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. We are hoping that severe threat doesn’t pan out for us, because all we really want is the rain! So Mother Nature, turn on the air conditioning and the water faucet…we are ready!!
