Councilman Defore Readies for Re-Election Campaign

Macon city council member Ed Defore plans to announce his re-election campaign for 2012 on Friday. Defore is running for Ward 2. He holds the record for being the longest elected official to a city council seat in Bibb County.

After forty years on the job, Defore says, "I have no intention of breaking the state record. The state record is 42 years."

This Macon native was also the first person to be elected to two public offices at the same time. Defore served on the Bibb County Board of Education and Macon City Council for 12 years.

Defore wishes to place more officers in neighborhoods with high crime rates. He also supports the Fallen Hero memorial, which honors local law enforcement, soldiers, and firefighters.

Defore says, "I will continue to push for an increase in pay scale for police officers and firefighters."

Defore will make an announcement to the public on Friday at 10:30 am.

Stratford Boys' Soccer Team Headed to Finals

It took two overtime periods and a bunch of penalty kicks, but the Stratford boys' soccer team is headed to the State Championship game.

The Eagles went up against Holy Spirit on the road Wednesday afternoon. They ended regulation knotted up at one a piece. No one scored in two ten-minute overtime periods. Stratford eventually won the game in penalty kicks 10-9.

Stratford will face the winner of the Mount de Sales - Augusta matchup which will happen Thursday night. Stratford will host the Championship game Saturday night on their home field.

'Mobile Lab' to Aid Macon-Bibb Unemployed

If you're unemployed and need assistance, the Macon-Bibb County Office of Workforce Development says it's coming to you.

On Friday, the department plans to unveil its "mobile lab unit" -- an  RV -- at an event at the Georgia Department of Labor's Macon Career Center at 3090 Mercer University Drive.

Howard Scott, Youth Services Coordinator for the Macon-Bibb County Office of Workforce Development, says the mobile office allows the department to go into the community and sign up people who are eligible for federal funds. The Unemployed Adult and Dislocated Worker Program offers hundreds of thousands of dollars in aid for job training, additional education, career counseling and help writing resumes, Scott said.

Miriam Paris Running for State Senate

Macon's city council president wants to join the State Senate.

With a small crowd of supporters on hand, Miriam Paris placed her bid for the District 26 state senate seat.

She made the announcement at Macon City Hall, where's she's been head of the council for three years.

She says, "As our next senator, I will fight to bring more industry to Bibb, Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Houston counties."

Paris is running for the seat now held by Robert Brown, but Brown plans to step down this spring to run for Mayor. Paris had tossed around the idea of running for Mayor.

She says, "When Senator Brown made his decision and his plans public that he that he was running for the mayor's office, then the seat was open, of course, and it made it an easier decision."

State Representative David Lucas also wants to run for Brown's Senate seat.

Report: Co-Worker Reported Animal-Control Case

A Macon animal control worker charged with animal cruelty was turned in by a co-worker, according to a Macon police report.

Last week, Bruce Rozier was arrested and charged with violating the state's animal cruelty law, according to Macon police. He later resigned.

A Macon police report released Wednesday says the complaint against Rozier was made by Guy Waggie of Warner Robins.

Contacted by phone Wednesday, Waggie said he works at Macon animal control, but he would not discuss Rozier's actions. He said Macon police have told him not to talk about the case.

Macon police have not revealed what Rozier is accused of, and Police Chief Mike Burns has not commented on the case.

The police report says Waggie reported a crime that allegedly occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 9. It does not describe what he saw.

Rozier was arrested around 6 p.m. the next night, the report says.
