Dogs, Jackets In, Bears Out Of NCAA's

The Georgia baseball team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will be the No. 3 seed in the Oregon State Regional in Corvallis starting Friday.

Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern are also included in the field of 64.

The Mercer Bears were not as fortunate and were passed over by the Selection Committee.

The Atlantic Sun Conference will be represented by Belmont which earned the conference's automatic bid by winning the A-Sun tournament over the weekend.

Regular season champ Stetson and Jacksonville also earned at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament from the A-Sun Conference.

The Bears finished the season with a 39-20 record including two wins over Georgia Tech and wins over Georgia and Georgia Southern.

Tips For Beating Heat Stress

"It's really hot," says Yvonne Shaw.

Shaw and her family visit Lake Tobesofkee every year, but this Memorial Day they brought something new.  "We even got a tent so that when they are out of the water they can sit in the shade."

She says her family members have never experienced a heat stroke because she makes sure to bring a lot of water and juice.  "Just to keep ourselves hydrated you know, because once we're in the sun, you're sweating a lot, so you use a lot of water, so you need to put that back in. So we make sure we have a whole case of water."

Others aren't as prepared for the heat.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there are different degrees of heat stress.

Heat stroke happens when the body becomes unable to control its temperature.  The CDC says body temperature can rise to 106 degrees or  higher within 10-15 minutes.

Macon Remembers Those Who Were Forgotten

Fort Hawkins Commission held its second annual Memorial Day Observance Ceremony at Fort Hill Cemetery.

The ceremony brings attention to the 20 to 200 soldiers who are buried at Fort Hill Cemetery in unmarked graves.  The soldiers served on the American Frontier over 200 years ago and now are lost in time.

The City of Macon has placed some gravestones at Fort Hill to honor the fallen but the final resting places for these soldiers are unknown.

"They're known, yet unknown, so we call their names today and we hope to find their families," said Marty Willett, Fort Hawkins Press Officer. "But we thought not only is this the first time that the servicemen that served at Ft. Hawkins are remembered and honored on Memorial Day, but the first time these veterans have been remembered also."

Willett says they hope to find the families of the soldiers.

Many of the guests who attended the ceremony say Memorial Day is a time to reflect.

Linwood Cemetery Honors Those Who Served

City leaders, retired servicemen and women and dozens of others came out to a Memorial Day ceremony at Linwood Cemetery.

The ceremony kicked off with patriotic songs from a local violinist and an introduction of the keynote speaker, Retired Lt. Colonel Jacqueline G. Scott.

Scott spoke about the importance of remembering what the day represents. Some people also watched a wreath laying and retiring of colors, while others walked around to visit grave sites of the fallen.

"It's not about the barbecue, the hot dogs, the hamburgers, the beer, the wine, it's about our fallen heroes. They gave the ultimate price for us to have this freedom," says Alice Jackson, President of the Macon Cemetery Preservation Corporation.

The cemetery is also the burial site for Macon's Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Rodney Davis.

State Rep. David Lucas Suffers Heart Attack

State Representative David Lucas suffered a heart attack on Sunday evening according to his wife, Macon councilwoman Elaine Lucas.

He is recovering at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

In a telephone interview Monday afternoon, David Lucas, 61 years old, said he's doing well after doctors operated on him to put two stents into his clogged arteries.

Lucas says he feels lucky to be alive after doctors told him a major artery was over 90% blocked.

Lucas says he is taking good care of his health.

"What I've got to do is watch my food intake, do what the doctor tells me to do, and take my medicine," says Lucas.

He recently announced plans to run for Robert Brown's State Senate seat when Brown steps down to run for Mayor.

Elaine Lucas says her husband was at his annual Soul Jam concert at Henderson Stadium in Macon on Sunday when he began suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Local Officials Welcome Tag Design Contest

If you're tired of the design on your Georgia license plate and you're creative juices inspire you to produce something better, now's your chance.

Georgia Department of Revenue officials plan to produce a new vehicle license plate in 2012, and they're having a contest to find it.

They're asking people and businesses around the state to come up with the new design. Entries must promote Georgia as the peach state, but beyond that, most anything goes.

Penny Reitz serves as deputy commissioner for tags in the Bibb County tax commissioner's office. Reitz and her boss, tax commissioner Tommy Tedders, like the idea of having a contest to determine the new tax design.

Reitz blends her sense of humor and love of the University of Georgia Bulldogs when suggesting her design.
