Unemployment Down In Macon and Warner Robins

Macon's unemployment rate for April declined two-tenths of a percentage point from March,  that's according to State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.

Butler said the unemployment rate for Macon fell from 10 percent in March to 9.8 percent in April.  He says the rate decreased because of the 400 new jobs added in the metro Macon area in April, most of them in service-related industries.

Warner Robins' unemployment rate also dropped in April. Warner Robins checked in with 7.2 percent jobless rate, which is down from 7.4 percent in March. Butler said the Warner Robins area added 500 jobs, most in the service-related area, as well as with the federal government.

The Dublin area was on the wrong side of their percentage change. Butler said the Dublin area has the highest percentage of unemployment with an 11.5 percent jobless rate.

Q&A with Futurebirds

Athens group Futurebirds are no strangers in Macon. The band has played here multiple times over the past few years and has built up a very supportive fanbase. On Monday, May 30th, they will be returning to Macon to open for the illustrious Grace Potter & The Nocturnals as part of the Bonnaroo Buzz Tour. The bands have been traveling all around the East Coast to promote the 10th anniversary of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and their featured performances that weekend. I got to talk to Payton Bradford as the band was driving from Nashville to Louisville and he filled me in on their happenings.

'Girls Auto Know' at Hutchings Career Center

About  20 girls came out to the first annual Girls Auto Know day camp at  Hutchings Career Center today. The three-day event is devoted to helping girls fix cars.

Ashanti Macon, a student at the Hutchings Career Center says, "Today, we're changing tires, we're learning how to unscrew the bolts and take the rims off and we're learning how to screw them back on and how to lift up the car."

The high school tenth graders got a crash course in fixing a flat.

The girls caught on quickly and Kierra Jones says, "The hardest part is putting the tire back on because you have to line it up and it's hard to see it when you're trying to put it back on by yourself."

The program also teaches girls how to change the oil in their car and troubleshoot under the hood.

Ashanti Macon says, "I love this program because now I know how to change tires by myself, I won't need anyone to help me."
