Macon Council Breathes New Life Into Smoking Ban

Some Macon City Council members are working to breathe new life into Macon's anti-smoking ordinance.

Councilwoman Nancy White says several sponsors of the ordinance met Wednesday with Mayor Robert Reichert to talk about drafting a new version.

The original draft, which Reichert vetoed last month, attempted to restrict smoking in many public places, bars, and restaurants.

"We talked about some of my reservations and why I had vetoed the ordinance," says Reichert. "They wanted to work with me to modify the ordinance because I think they're very interested in passing it again."

Reichert says he vetoed the first draft because it was too broad and that business people didn't have enough opportunity to voice concerns.

He also says he wants the city to work with the county to pass a similar law. Some opponents said a city-wide smoking ordinance would force business out into the county, where bar and restaurant patrons could smoke.

Macon Man Hurt in Cycle Wreck

A Macon man suffered minor injuries in a motorcycle accident that slowed traffic on Highway 247 Thursday morning.

It happened about 11 a.m. on Highway 247 north, about a half mile south of the Broadway-Pio Nono intersection.

Sgt. Sean DeFoe of the sheriff's office says 34-year-old Jason Melton was headed north in the right lane and clipped the back of a pickup truck as he changed lanes.

He lost control and slid on the motorcycle.

The left and center lanes were closed for about 45 minutes, DeFoe said.

DeFoe said Melton was taken to a local hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries.

He said Melton will also be given several citations, including speeding, following too closely and operating without a license.

Viewer Charles Lott sent us picture of the wreck.

Bibb County Honors Fallen Officers

Macon's Law Enforcement Memorial welcomed some special visitors Wednesday as part of National Police week.

Deputy Chad McDonald and Deputy Mike Thomas were the newest names carved into the memorial at the Macon Centreplex. McDonald died after a 2007 automobile accident, and Thomas died after a 2008 motorcycle accident.

McDonald's niece Bryanna came to Wednesday's observance with her family. She remembers her uncle as a hero. "He had went and locked people up and saved people's lives."

Councilman Ed DeFore pushed for the memorial, and says fallen public safety officials should be remembered. ""I've got the names of the first Macon policeman that was killed in 1921 and the rest of them through this year," he says.
