Rivoli Road Home Damaged By Trees

Emergency crews in Macon spent the day cleaning up trees and downed power lines along Rivoli Drive in Macon.

William Boswell says his Rivoli home suffered damage in two of the bedrooms, the front yard and the back patio.

Boswell says his wife alerted him when she heard sirens.  They grabbed their children and ran out the back door to their basement.

The father of two then says he struggled to open the basement door but was able to open it on his second attempt, just a few seconds before bricks started to fall from a wall above them. Boswell says the storm took him by surprise and he's glad no one was hurt.

"The thing that was so amazing is just how quickly it went from close to dead calm, to absolute mayhem so it was an experience I hope never to relive," says Boswell.

Boswell says he and his family are temporarily staying in a hotel.

Boat Race Works To Clean Up River

A dozen boats raced down the Ocmulgee River for the Friends of the Trail Go Green Regatta Boat Race Saturday afternoon.

They launched from Amerson Water Works Park and headed down to Spring Street.

Competitors picked up trash as they glided down the river, and the boater who picked up the most won.

The race also gave out prizes for the most decorated boat, the fastest craft, and oldest and youngest competitors.

Meanwhile, folks on shore got to enjoy a little music and relaxation while they watched the race.

Julie Wilkerson with Friends of the Trail says the regatta race honors the river.  "The trail is a great place that you can enjoy with your family," she says.  "If you're a jogger or walk, it's a beautiful place to bring your animals and your pets and just enjoy a beautiful day."

Teen Sleepover Turns into Nightmare During Storm

When strong winds ripped through Bibb County's Ousley Place neighborhood Saturday, four teenage girls enjoying a sleepover say they woke up to sounds of rattling and trees crashing.

Cheyanne Hamilton, 15, remembers waking up to her sister's screams.

"She yelled 'get on the ground, get on the ground,'" Hamilton said.

Hamilton, her sister, and two friends say they ducked down besides the beds they had been sleeping in, to protect themselves from the sounds of crashing outside their windows.

"I was like 'there's a tree falling, there's a tree falling,'" Hamilton said.

"I was in the room with Cheyanne and she grabbed on to me," Hope Kearnes, 15, of Bibb County said. "I didn't know what was going on."

The friends had been sleeping over her house, Hamilton said, when strong storms ripped through parts of north Bibb County shortly before 6 a.m.

Family 'Counts Blessings' After Storm

All was calm late Saturday morning at the Adams home on Wesleyan Woods Drive, but just hours earlier, strong winds knocked large pine trees onto the house.

"You can see the insulation here that's coming down from the ceiling," said Ross Adams, as he pointed out a tree limb poking through the ceiling in the laundry room.

Ross Adams says he was out of town when tornado sirens went off, but his wife and two children weathered the storm in their basement.

"My oldest who's 20 is a special needs child so he was out of his routine," said Dana Adams.  "He did not want to be down there... and to get my 3-year-old to stay and be calm... it was interesting."

Dana Adams said she heard a noise, but didn't know what it was, until she ventured back upstairs to her bedroom.

"I just happened to look out my window and I saw a tree branch," she said.

Wind Storm Slams North Macon Neighborhoods

This morning's severe storm downed trees and power lines and damaged several homes and a Days Inn in north Macon.

Much of the damage was centered on the Forest Hill-Wimbish-Wesleyan neighborhoods. Forest Hill Road was closed north of Wimbish Road.

Mayor Robert Reichert says the early word from public safety officials is that the damage is "not severe."

Sheriff Jerry Modena told people to stay off the roads until  the damage is cleared. He said anybody with damage to their home can call the sheriff's department or 911.

So far, there are no reports of injuries in Bibb County.

Georgia Power says about 1,000 customers in Macon were without power at 9 a.m. Most were around Wesleyan Road. That number was down from around 4,000 customers several hours earlier.
