Atlanta, Macon Unemployment Hits 10.4 Percent

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Georgia Department of Labor reports that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Atlanta increased to 10.4 percent in August.

That's up three-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 10.1
percent in July. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed workers in the metro area increased to 275,215, up 6,163.

Labor officials say that in metro Albany, the unemployment rate
rose by one-tenth of a point to 10.9 percent. The rate also rose by one-tenth of a point in Athens, to 7.8 percent, and by two-tenths of a point in Gainesville, to 9.2 percent.

In Macon, the rate increased by three-tenths of a point to
10.4 percent. The number of unemployed workers in the metro area increased to 11,654, up 252 from 11,402.
