Bibb Board to Interview Superintendent Candidates in Atlanta
News

Bibb County's board of education will interview several superintendent candidates in Atlanta this weekend.

The board is scheduled to interview candidates starting at 1 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday at the Atlanta Airport Marriott.

Board chairman Gary Bechtel says that site is more convenient for candidates flying in from out of town.

Last week, Bechtel said they narrowed a list of 14 candidates down to seven.

Friday, he said they're scheduled to interview three on Saturday and one on Sunday.

He said they are still trying to schedule an interview with a fifth candidate. He said one person from the field of seven dropped out because he's a finalist for the superintendent's job in a larger district and another said he didn't think he'd get the Bibb job.

Bechtel says the final seven included both applicants from Georgia and from across the country.

Bechtel says the board will pay to put up the candidates, the board members, and a representative of their search firm at an Atlanta hotel. He said he didn't know what that would cost.

The board has scheduled executive sessions for both Saturday and Sunday. Under state law, the board can interview candidates behind closed doors until they select three or fewer finalists; then those interviews must be public.

Supt. Sharon Patterson left the job March 1 after more than a decade. Sylvia McGee, the interim superintendent, is not a candidate to fill the job permanently.
