Bibb BOE Reviews 4 Candidates for Superintendent

The Bibb County Board of Education met behind closed doors Monday to discuss the next steps in the search for a new superintendent.

Board President Gary Bechtel says the board is considering four candidates. Two of those are current superintendents, one works in another role for a school district and a fourth is a former educator. Bechtel says the board can announce the names of up to three finalists, but says the board has not yet narrowed down the list.

"It's very difficult to try to get to a group of finalists because all four would make good superintendents," Bechtel said. "It's just a matter of hashing out their strong points, weak points and seeing who the best fit for Bibb County is."

Bechtel says the board could request a second round of interviews with each candidate, but says they haven't scheduled any.

He says board members have been engaged in open discussions about the candidates and says the search is going "extremely well."

Once the board announces its finalists, Bechtel says they have to wait 14 days before choosing a superintendent.

Sylvia McGee took over as interim superintendent for the district in March, after former superintendent Sharon Patterson resigned in February, while under investigation for ethics violations.
