Central Georgians Celebrate Sidney Lanier | News
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
Several Central Georgians showed up to a Macon cottage to celebrate the life of Sidney Lanier.
The cottage was named after Lanier who would've turned 169 years old on Thursday. The audience traveled back to 1935 with actors that portrayed figure like Douglas Freeman and Dolly Lamar.
The group also presented some of Lanier's poetry. Lanier wrote music and poetry until his death in 1881. He is most famous for his poems "The Marshes of Glynn," written about the open salt marshes of Glynn County, Georgia.
Historic Macon hosted the event. Director Janis Haley says they honor Lanier's influence in Central Georgia each year.
"We still remember him and we still say thank you for all the beautiful things he did," says Haley.
Lanier is the only Georgian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of Great Americans.
