Loaded Gun Found at Northeast High

Bibb County school officials say they found a loaded handgun in a bookbag at Northeast High School this morning.

Daniel DeCoursey, campus police chief for Bibb County schools, say they're still trying to find out who the gun and the bookbag belong to.

No one was injured and Northeast parents were notified by letter and phone call, according to a news release from the school district. The school was not placed on lockdown, as the gun was discovered before school opened.

DeCoursey says a 16-year-old student grabbed the bookbag out of a family car this morning, thinking it was hers. DeCoursey says several students rode in the car this morning.

Around 7:30 a.m., after realizing that the bag was not hers, the student brought it to the school office, where employees found the 9-mm semi-automatic handgun.

DeCoursey says the bag apparently belonged to the girl's older brother, who does not attend school.

He says they're still investigating the case.
