Events, People, Schools

Alexander II Magnet
Beginning at 9:30 a.m., Alexander II will hold its annual Veterans Day Recognition Program, and students have been encouraged to invite a veteran to attend. The Rutland High School JROTC will present the colors, the Rutland High School Band will play each branch’s theme song while students display banners thanking them for their service, and the Alexander II Chorus will sing several selections. This year’s featured speaker will be Major Zena Crump from Robins Air Force Base.

Barden Elementary
Barden Elementary’s Veterans Program Saluting Faithful Servants will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Media Center and will feature a student reading and poem, followed by guest speaker Master Sgt. Jason Pierre. A Silent Tribute will also be held followed by a Tribute to Veterans.

Burdell-Hunt Magnet
Beginning at 9:30 a.m., Burdell-Hunt will hold a Veterans Day Program in the school’s atrium. Community members and students’ parents, grandparents, and other family members that are veterans have been invited to the program so their service can recognized and honored. The student chorus will perform, and the Student Council will read poems.

“During the month of November we demonstrate character traits such as pride and patriotism, and Veterans Day allows us to show thanks and appreciation to those men and women who have dutifully served the United States of America,” says Principal Tanya Allen. “It is important for us to teach our students that their freedom and security is due largely to the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces.”

Porter Elementary
A Veterans’ Breakfast will be served from 8-9 a.m. for all Porter Elementary parents and grandparents that have served the United States in any branch of the Armed Forces.

Skyview Elementary
Beginning at 1:30 p.m., Skyview Elementary will host its annual Veterans Celebration with the Rutland High School Color Guard, singing and interactive participation with students and chorus, the unveiling of Phase III of the Veterans Wall of Honor, and a reception for honored veterans and their families.

Westside High School
Westside High School’s Veterans Day Program will begin at 9 a.m. on Nov. 11, with all JROTC Cadets in uniform standing in formation by flight in front of the flag pole. At approximately 9:10 a.m., Reveille will be played, the U.S. Flag will be raised, and the Westside Chorus will sing the National Anthem. Major Kevin Gunerman will conduct a Roll Call of Westside Veterans, and Cadets will call out the members of their family that have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. This year's guest speaker, US Army (Ranger) veteran Witt Gaither, will be introduced by a member of the Student Council. The ceremony will close with a Patriots’ Song as sung by the Westside Chorus, with Mr. Russell Watkins conducting.
