Unloaded Gun Found Outside Bloomfield Middle School

Campus police confiscated an unloaded gun from a Bloomfield Middle School eighth grader before he entered school today, according to a Bibb schools news release.

After a tip from another child's parent, school officials say, police searched the 14-year-old boy as he approached the school today.

Bibb Campus Police Chief Daniel DeCoursey says they found the unloaded .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol in his pocket before 8 a.m.

The gun had been left unsecured in the child's home, he said.

The district said no one was injured and all students, faculty, and staff are safe.

The student was suspended and taken to a youth detention center to await an evidentiary hearing on whether he will be expelled.

DeCoursey says they don't know why the student brought the gun to school.

He said there were no reported threats, and the boy may have brought it in as a "show and tell."

"The pattern is, these guns aren't being secured at home," he said.

He said the Bibb County District Attorney's Office will investigate further to determine whether the boy and parents should face further charges.
