Special Adoption Hours Saturday at Macon Animal Control
Special Adoption Hours Saturday at Macon Animal Control

For only the second time in recent memory, Macon Animal Control will be open -- albeit briefly -- on Saturday, June 2. Many area residents interested in adopting a dog from the facility cannot get there during the shelter's normal weekday-only operating hours due to work or school. The special adoption event, planned for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.,  provides an opportunity for more adopters to visit the shelter, where time is rapidly running out for the animals.

The cats and kittens have all left the building. More than 40 dogs have left, too, headed for new lives with new families, or bound for rescue and a foster home while they keep looking for a family to adopt them.

Macon Animal Control shelter is shutting down June 6 for 3 to 5 days, and all of the remaining dogs at the shelter must be out by then or be killed.

As of Wednesday night, 33 dogs remain at the shelter. With 8 days left, that means at least four dogs need to leave the building every single day until shutdown.

The population in Middle Georgia is high enough that more than enough homes should be available for the remaining 33 dogs at Macon Animal Control. Some sponsorship and donor money is available to help in some cases. Contact On Borrowed Time on Facebook for help.

To help facilitate adoptions, Central Georgia CARES will attend the MPD Fun Fest Friday, June 1 at 6 p.m.  They'll have some of the dogs from Macon Animal Control with them at the event so the public can meet the dogs and, hopefully, fall in love.

Lisa Gilbert of Central Georgia CARES said you can find the group and the dogs in front of the Terminal Station and Georgia Sports Hall of Fame during the Fun Fest.

Macon Animal Control is at 1010 Eleventh Street, right behind the weigh station for the city landfill. Call 751-9200 for information.

If you would like to foster a dog from Macon Animal Control through one of the local rescue groups, contact the rescue directly and let them know which dog (if you have a preference) you would like to foster through them. Rescues have certain requirements and the first one you call may not be able to take on the pet you want to foster. Please check with other rescues. Don't give up!
