Mercer Announces Marching Band to Join First Football Season | Arts & Culture
MACON, Ga. – Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole announced Tuesday that the university has officially approved the formation of a school Marching Band, set to debut in the fall of 2013. Current Mercer Pep Band Director Doug Cowden’s will take over a full-time assignment as Director of Bands, in charge of both the Marching and Pep bands.
Cowden began working with Mercer as director of the university’s pep band in the fall of 2006. His new title tasks him with the job of recruiting students for formation of band at the start of the 2013-14 school year.
“Putting together a high-level marching band will help in continuing to elevate the esprit de corps within the Mercer athletic community,” Cole said. “The formation of this unit once again shows our commitment to the many facets of a first class athletic department.”
The addition of the marching band coincides with the restart of football at Mercer, set to kick off its 2013 season on August 31, 2013 against Reinhardt. Mercer’s marching band will provide in-game and halftime entertainment for all eight of the Bears’ home games in 2013, while also making select road trips, exhibition performances, and participating in marching band competitions.
“The Mercer University marching band will display Mercer’s commitment to excellence by striving to achieve unprecedented levels of performance,” Cowden said. “I’m honored and proud that Mr. Cole has chosen me to lead the marching band and set new standards for Mercer University.”
