Former Mayor Speaks at Northeast High Black History Month Event | Arts & Culture

On Thursday, February 28, Northeast High School held its “From Shackles to Success” Black History Month celebration. The students in attendance were treated to performances from the Northeast JROTC Drill Team, Northeast Step Team, and poetry readings by faculty members.
Former Macon Mayor C. Jack Ellis was the keynote speaker at the event. He was introduced by Macon City Councilwoman Elaine Lucas. In his remarks, Mr. Ellis spoke about the journey of African Americans in the United States. He also stressed the importance of voting and spoke about past generations that made many sacrifices to secure the right to vote. Mr. Ellis concluded his remarks by telling the students, “work hard to make your community better, not only for yourself, but for everyone around you.”
