12 Local Children Chosen to Play Munchkins  in National Touring Show of ‘The Wizard of Oz’

The National Tour of “The Wizard of Oz” announced that 12 children from Central Georgia will perform the roles of munchkins in Macon showings of the beloved classic live on stage. “The Wizard of Oz” will be performing at The Grand Opera House March 15-16 at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Macon.

“This is a spectacular opportunity for our talented local youth to perform side-by-side with seasoned Broadway actors,” said Betsy Fitzgerald, executive director of The Grand Opera House.  “Macon is fortunate to have quality arts education organizations like the Academy of the Performing Arts that give students the skills required for performances of this caliber.”

Cherry Blossom Gift Shop Opens, Pre-Festival Events Begin

The Cherry Blossom Festival gift shop is now open at a new location on 567 Cherry St.

That was announced at a press conference Monday.

The gift shop plans to sell mugs, 2011 festival pins, art prints, and more.

Public hours are from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and will open daily during the festival.

The shop is open until April 1.

At the press conference, Cherry Blossom Festival President and CEO Karen Lambert announced a pre-festival event, "Drink Pink."

The event will debut Cherry Blossom Festival signature cocktails created by local restaurants and bars, Lambert says.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Macon Arts Alliance on Friday, March 4 from 5 until 8 p.m.

The Arts Alliance will host a textile show and display paintings by J. Alan Gibson in the gallery during the event.

The 567 Art Opening Scheduled for First Friday

The 567 Art Opening Scheduled for First Friday

The 567 Gallery will host an opening reception for their March art show featuring the works of Craig Burkhalter Friday, March 4, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The show will feature Burkhalter's etchings and stenciled prints that draw on themes including strange religions, nostalgic scenes, family lore and politics. Many use experimental techniques combining ink, acrylics and type.

Burkhalter, a lifelong resident of Macon, received his B.S. in Ed. / Art and his M.F.A. from Georgia Southern University. Primarily a printmaker, his work also includes drawing, photography, handmade paper and art books.

Light refreshments wil be served.

The works featured at the reception will remain in The 567 Gallery until March 25. In addition to the art opening, The 567 Gallery is open by appointment (melissa@the567.org).

Art openings are held every First Friday at The 567 Gallery.

The 567 Offers Acting Workshop for Youth

The 567 Offers Acting Workshop for Youth

Students ages 8 to 18 will have a chance to learn or review the fundamentals of acting, as well as have some fun, with actress Penelope Lowder on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. at The 567 Center.

The workshop will last two and a half hours and focus on improvisation skills.

Lowder has acted professionally for 15 years, performing on stages in Los Angeles, New York and London.

In her workshops she tries to both pass on her extensive knowledge of acting and allow students to explore their own creativity.

The cost of the workshop is $10.

The 567 Center is located at 533 Cherry St.

Perry Belly Dance is now offering belly dance lessons to students of all levels in the Perry and Warner Robins area.

Our studio is conveniently located in Downtown Perry, GA and we are also available for private and group lessons at our studio or at your site.

Classes include:  Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Professional belly dancing.
