Georgia College welcomes a new member to the academic leadership team.

Dr. James E. Payne will be the new dean of the J. Whitney Bunting College of Business.

With an extensive academic record, Payne most recently held the position of provost at the University of New Orleans. He has also served as the regional vice chancellor for academic affairs and research at the University of South Florida Polytechnic, where he also was a professor of finance and economics. Payne also served as interim dean, chair and professor of economics at Illinois State University.

“With his exceptional leadership experience in administration, Dr. Payne will be a valuable asset to our academic team,” said Dr. Kelli Brown, provost and vice president of academic affairs. “His knowledge and background will bring the necessary skills to build upon the excellent foundation set in J. Whitney Bunting College of Business.”

Payne holds a Ph.D. in economics with more than two decades of experience in higher education.

“I am honored to be selected as dean of the J. Whitney Bunting College of Business,” said Payne. “Georgia College has clearly distinguished itself nationally as a leading public liberal arts university.  Moreover, the College of Business builds upon the strong liberal arts foundation in providing an exceptional student-centered business education.  I am quite excited to lead the dedicated, high-quality faculty and staff in continuing to elevate the college’s profile in preparing students for the ever changing global marketplace, engaging with alumni and developing partnerships with industry and government to serve the needs of the region and state.”

Payne begins his new role July 1.
