MACON, GA.--Community Health Works received a $25,000 grant to provide dental care assistance to Macon's underserved through the City of Macon's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The grant will provide routine teeth cleanings, extractions and X-rays to those who are eligible.

The grant funds Community Health Works' Dental Access Program for the next year. The services will be provided by Dr. F. Brent Davis, DMD, at Oglethorpe Dental Center.

Starting now, those who seek to qualify should contact Community Health Works' Director of Member Services Shanell Dumas to determine eligibility. Once eligibility is determined, participants will receive a dental care voucher. CHW will coordinate the dental appointment with the provider.

Those seeking to participate in this service may call the Community Health Works office at 478.254.5228.

Community Health Works previously implemented an earlier version of this grant, also funded by the CDBG program, in 2008. During that time, CHW provided 308 distinct dental services to 114 people.

Recent studies suggest linkages between poor oral health and the occurrence of heart disease and stroke. In a study published by Health Affairs, 51 percent of Americans with below-average income reported that they needed dental care but did not see a dentist due to cost, compared to only 24 percent of those with above-average incomes.
