CTAE Students Explore Career Options

During the month of February, National Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) Month, District CTAE students participated in the 2013 Job Shadow Experience.

The Job Shadow initiative allows the school system and the community to form a mutually beneficial partnership. The program required students at each high school to complete an application requesting the opportunity to shadow a professional in their chosen career field. The Job Shadow Coordinators from each school were then charged with matching the students with individuals who would become both a resource and a mentor for the students.

The career interests included Medicine, Dentistry, Accounting, Politics, Pharmacy, Journalism, Media Communications, Cosmetology, and Public Safety to name a few.

The coordinators were: Shelton Brown, Central High School; Leigh Olsen, Howard High School; Maggie Bruce, Hutchings Career Center; Alonza Raines, Northeast High School; Cynthia Dennis, Rutland High School; Willie Batts, Southwest High School; and Philip Stark, Westside High School.

CTAE Supervisors:

“This is a great opportunity for our students to see how the lessons they are taught in our CTAE labs apply to real world work situations.  Some of our students were even offered jobs during their job shadow experience!” (Charles Baima)

“The job shadow program allows CTAE students the opportunity to showcase the employability and soft skills that they have learned throughout their pathways. These skills include: punctuality, time management, drive, professionalism, commitment, decisiveness and communication.” (Jason Weiss)

"The Job Shadowing experience is a great way for our students to learn what happens daily in their field of interest and observe firsthand the new technologies being used on the job. It helps them network with community leaders and make smart choices about their careers. Our students look forward to this day every year." (Jo Brown)
