Area unemployment rates fall

Central Georgia's unemployment rate continues to dip, falling from 7.8 to 7.7 percent from December to January.

The rate has declined mostly because the amount of new layoffs decreased by 41 percent, according to a release.

In January 2013, one year ago, the unemployment rate was 9.3 percent.

The Men's Wearhouse will buy Jos. A. Bank Clothiers for $1.8 billion, the companies said in a news release Tuesday

Boards of directors of the companies have unanimously approved the transaction.

Men's Wearhouse and Jos. A. Bank combined will have more than 1,700 stores in the U.S., with about 23,000 employees, according to a PRNewswire release posted on both companies' websites.

District hosts Procurement Vendor Fair

The Bibb County School District hosted a Procurement Vendor Fair on Tuesday, February 25, at the Welcome Center Annex. The fair was open to all businesses, but was particularly intended to target small businesses, as well as those owned and operated by women and minorities.

Business owners were encouraged to attend in order to provide the District with their name and organization specialty, and to gain as much knowledge as possible pertaining to doing business with a state agency.

If Hollywood handed out Oscars for Best Recent Comeback Among Beaten Down Retailers, J.C. Penney would have been among Sunday night's nominees.

J.C. Penney shares are up about 6% to $8.45 in Tuesday afternoon trading for a two-day, 17% gain. That's on top of last week's 25% [pop, after the company posted better-than-expected fourth quarter results and said was on fist-quarter track for its first profitable quarter since since early 2011.
