Two Bibb Schools Receive $1,000 Grants to Improve Literacy | Community Spirit
Two Bibb County schools have received a $1,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. This foundation aids in providing schools with materials in order to increase their reading scores.
The Bibb County schools to receive this grant are Bernd Elementary School and Weaver Middle School. Both schools applied for the grant through their media departments.
Whitney Bender, a math and social studies teacher at Weaver Middle School, recently completed her Master's in Instructional Technology. As part of her graduate study, she applied for the grant. Upon receiving the grant, Weaver Middle is planning to purchase eReaders and eBooks, which will be available to all students in the Media Center. Weaver’s goal for the year is to improve their reading scores. They are planning pre-tests and post-tests to track the improvement made from the investments made using the grant.
Melanie Wheeler is currently serving her second year as the media specialist for Bernd Elementary. Bernd Elementary is also planning to purchase eReaders and eBooks for the school's Media Center. The students will be able to automatically take an Accelerated Reading test on the eReader after they have finished reading the book. The faculty plans to compare the reading scores from last year to the reading scores tallied in the spring in order to track the progress of the students.
