Howard High Celebrates Success of School Store with Second Location | Community Spirit
Howard High School opened a second school store, the Dawg House 2, on Tuesday, October 15. The new location provides additional opportunities for the DECA chapter, an association for marketing students, to raise funds for the chapter's trips and competitions.
The original Dawg House is located in front of the school's gym and now operates during the morning offering cappuccinos, juices and muffins. This Dawg House also is open for open houses and home basketball games. The new Dawg House 2 is located outside of the lunchroom and operates during lunch time when snack foods, T-shirts and slushies are sold to students and faculty.
“Everything about marketing is location, location, location and right outside the lunchroom is a great location for the Dawg House 2,” said Leigh Olsen, Howard's CTAE Department Chair and Marketing Education Coordinator.
Casey Heslin and Taylor McBryant are the managers of the Dawg House 2. Both students are seniors of Howard High and this is their second year working in the Dawg House. They participate in operating the Dawg House through the course "Marketing Internship." Each student in the class is given a work schedule, similar to a real job. The students are also assigned different tasks. When the students are not working in the Dawg House, they are doing work in the classrooms. They do weekly journals, time sheets and several projects.
“By working in the Dawg House we learn how to handle the stressfulness of a real job, how to multitask and the importance of customer service," Casey said.
“We learn how to handle the responsibility of money and how to run retail,” Taylor said.
“I hope my students learn how to make change. I hope they learn how to make deposits. I hope they learn how to buy inventory properly. I hope they learn and understand distribution process, selling process, customer service, professionalism, and organizational skills. It is a working and learning lab,” Ms. Olsen said.
