Improvements coming to East Macon rec center | Community Spirit
A leaky roof and outdated equipment are now things of the past at East Macon Recreation Center. The $800,000 improvement project includes new basketball goals, scoreboard, and floors. "I know people in the community have been really wanting something new and fresh, so I think the changes are something they'll get really excited about," says the center's director Latoya Harden. The upgrades are not just inside the building. Macon-Bibb Recreation Director Doc Dougherty says his crews are also busy resurfacing the pool and fixing the roof. He says this center has a variety of attractions, but he also wants to create specialty programs unique to each of Macon-Bibb's centers. "We're developing a robotics program at another center for the education side of the STEM labs," says Dougherty. "But also we're looking at making one of our centers a cultural arts center where it's not just tap dance and regular dance classes, but also heavy theatre and drama." All of this is funded through SPLOST dollars. Dougherty says the East Macon Center will be finished by the end of the month.
