Shelter Over Capacity - adopters, fosters and rescues desperately needed

Bibb County animal shelter is bursting at the seams, and a mass killing is already planned for Wednesday to make room.

Many perfectly good puppies, kittens, dogs and cats will go out with the trash Wednesday afternoon unless county residents come through to save them as they've done before.

In early June, when the shelter was set to close for fumigation, residents in the Macon area, along with rescuers and fosters, answered the call to save every life. Not one of the nearly 100 adoptable animals at the shelter was euthanized.

July 5, 15 dogs and puppies were killed because the shelter had more than the number of animals the temporary director wants at the shelter. The number set to be killed this Wednesday is much higher - more than 20 at last report, and possibly

The shelter, at 1010 Eleventh Street, is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you cannot adopt, consider providing a foster home under the auspices of an area rescue group. You provide shelter and love and the rescue group provides food, vet care and whatever else the pet needs. Simply contact any rescue and let them know you want to foster. If the first one isn't interested, call the next one o n the list. below.

Take a look at our photo gallery of some of the animals in danger at the shelter. Better yet, go to the shelter and meet some of the dogs and cats face to face. One will surely melt your heart.

Adoption fees are $80 plus a refundable deposit. However, some of the available animals have part or full sponsorship for adoption.

Macon Purrs N Paws can only take on more animals if a foster home is available. The rescue group cannot pull any animals currently at the shelter any other way, according to Anne Brennaman.

If someone wants to adopt and needs assistance, she said, the rescue will pull the animal and only charge you the cost for spay/neuter surgery and rabies shots (required by law). Post your request on the On Borrowed Time Facebook page and someone will get back to you quickly.

Call the shelter 751-9200 for information.
