Phase II of New & Pine Streets Project Begins
Improvements Made Possible with SPLOST, Hospital, & Grant Funds

The City of Macon and the Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) are continuing to work together to improve the roads, sidewalks, and traffic flow along Pine Street between Spring and First Streets and New Street from Pine Street to Plum Street Lane. Phase II of the project began Monday, November 26.

Phase II involves the intersection at New and Pine Streets, in front of the Emergency Center. The area will be repaved, and the four crosswalks at that intersection will be recreated. New Street will be blocked off from Plum Street Lane to the intersection, and Pine Street will remain closed from the intersection to Spring Street.

For employees, patients, and other people traveling to the Medical Center, the following information will be very useful during this process.

Emergency Room (EC)

  • New Street will not be open to any thru-traffic.
  • Emergency Center will not be accessible from New Street.
  • All traffic will be directed to access the Emergency Center from First Street.
  • Emergency Center parking will be in the Red Deck.
  • Emergency Center patients will be dropped off at 770 Pine Street (McDonald’s entrance).
  • Egress (exiting) from Red Deck will be on Forsyth Street only.

Emergency Medical Services

  • EMS vehicles will also be re-routed to the Emergency Center with a cut through from Forsyth Street.
  • Children’s Hospital patients being admitted by ambulance will need to use the Spring Street ambulance entrance.

Children’s Hospital / Children’s Hospital Outpatient Services (CHOPS)

  • Patients who are admitted and discharged in The Children’s Hospital will enter through the side entrance of the 700 Spring Street building.   This will be the temporary main entrance for The Children’s Hospital.
  • The surface parking lot on Spring Street, next to the building will be utilized as the patient drop-off and dismissal area.  Patients and accompanying parent(s) will enter from the side entrance on the 2nd floor, follow the signs and take the alternate route to the main lobby of The Children’s Hospital.  Attendants will be available to assist customers.
  • Patients receiving radiology, imaging/x-ray services and outpatient treatment in CHOPS will use this entrance. Visiting family will be directed to park in nearby lot on corner of Forsyth and Spring Street.
  • Children’s Hospital patients being admitted by ambulance will need to use the Spring Street ambulance entrance.

Central Georgia Diagnostics

  • For Central Georgia Diagnostics Outpatient Lab, handicap parking will still be available on Spring Street.  All other patients/visitors will use the Yellow Deck parking.

Surgery Center/Infusion Center

  • Patients and visitors utilizing The Surgery Center will be admitted and discharged through the 2nd floor entrance assessable through the Red Deck on Pine Street.  Families are encouraged to park in the Red Deck.
  • Patients of The W.T. Anderson Infusion Center are encouraged to park in the Red Deck and enter through the 2nd floor bridge access.  This area will be staffed and attendants will be available to assist them with transport.
  • Patients and visitors utilizing the main entrance at 840 Pine Street are encouraged to park in the Red Deck and enter through the 2nd floor bridge access.  Attendants will be available to assist with directions.

Physician Parking

  • Designated Physician parking will be available in all parking decks.

About the project

Currently, the road and sidewalks are in terrible shape, including broken pavement, broken sidewalks, a lack of handicapped ramps in some areas, and inadequate handicapped ramps in others. When finished, the area will feature:

  • New sidewalks throughout the project area with ADA handicapped ramps;
  • A median planted with trees;
  • Designated loading zones located against the curb;
  • Crosswalks and a pedestrian-friendly concrete improvement in the intersection of New and Pine Streets; and
  • Trees on the street instead of on-street parking.

“The goal is improved access and safety for the pedestrian,” says Wimberly Treadwell, Project Manager. “There won’t be any more box trucks in the middle of the road, and medians and crosswalks will help control vehicle traffic.”

The total cost of the project will be $1,035,000, and funding comes from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax ($160,000), the MCCG ($175,000), and GDOT’s Transportation Enhancement program ($700,000).
