Bibb Employee Makes it a Happy Holiday for Homeless Students

An anonymous donation by a Bibb County School District employee will make it a Merry Christmas for a dozen students here. Each one will receive a large shopping bag filled with toys, shoes, clothing, and holiday treats.

The gifts are being distributed by Keri Rowe who serves as the liaison to homeless students for the District.

“Donations like this are immensely appreciated and help to supplement what we can provide through McKinney-Vento to serve our students experiencing homelessness," she said. "We actually accept donations such as gently used uniforms, clothing and shoes throughout the school year.”

McKinney-Vento is federal legislation signed into law in 1987. The goal is to remove barriers to homeless children enrolling in school and giving them the opportunity to succeed in the classroom. Key provisions include: enrolling students even if they lack records normally required for registration, coordinating transportation, arranging immunizations required for enrollment, mainstreaming students into regular schools, and giving them access toall programs and services available to other students.

If you are interested in donating items to homeless students, contact Keri Rowe to arrange a drop-off. She may be reached at (478) 765-8633.
