Parent Academy Hosts Inaugural Graduation | Community Spirit
Thirty adults graduated from the Parent Academy's inaugural fall session on Thursday, December 13.
"The Parent Academy has proven to be a successful avenue to retool our parents and grandparents with the skills needed to assist their children to become productive citizens and leaders in today's society," said Dr. Terrance D. Smith, Coordinator of Adult Education. "We want to empower our parents with critical thinking skills and life skills to ensure the success of all students. It is our objective to broaden their educational horizons to promote retention, progression and graduation for all students in the Bibb County School District."
The Parent Academy's winter session will begin on January 14. Adults may register online at www.bibb.k12.ga.us/parentacademy for any of the Parent Academy courses offered at the District's Welcome Center. Registration for the winter session ends on January 11.
All courses are taught by certified instructors and are aligned with the new Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) in the areas of literacy, math, science, technology and social studies. Courses are offered for free in the mornings and evenings, and class materials are provided at no cost.
Graduating parents completed surveys about their experience and 100 percent said their participation in the Parent Academy has led them to become more involved in their children's lives. They also said they noticed a significant increase in their children's grades and behavior, and that their children have made progress toward demonstrating "strength of character" and "college readiness." All participants indicated that they would highly recommend for others to participate in the Parent Academy.
