Police: Report of Gunfire at Central H.S. Just Firecrackers
Crime, Schools

Macon police say reports of gunfire from within Central High School early Thursday morning turned out to just be firecrackers.

According to a police news release, several 911 calls were placed around 7:22 a.m., reporting shots fired in the Central High lunchroom.

Lt. Andra Grinstead, Macon-Bibb 911 Director, said she and Precinct 3 officers responded, making a "coordinated entrance" as if an "active shooter" were on campus.

That's when officers determined the reports were initiated by a firecracker.

Because of its proximity to Central, Miller Middle School went initiated security measures, according to a news release from Bibb County schools.

No one was injured and classes resumed as normal with students taking their planned final exams.

13WMAZ was first notified by a concerned parent on her way to pick up her children who attend Central and were outside at the time.

School administrators are currently investigating the matter and will send a letter home with students later today with more details, if they become available.

Check back with 13WMAZ for updates.
