Judge Sentences Jomekia Pope To Life Without Parole | Crime

A Macon man, who pleaded guilty to setting his girlfriend on fire, was sentenced Wednesday to life without the possibility of parole.

After two days of testimony in a sentencing hearing, Judge S. Phillip Brown ruled that he wouldn't grant him parole, but he also said on record that he reserved the right to change his mind. 

While delivering his ruling, Judge Brown said it was sad from everybody's perspective.

Applause from Latosha Taylor's family erupted after the decision. 

Pope's attorney, Dennis Francis, asked the court to consider life with the possibility. 

In August 2005, Jomekia Pope was charged with dousing Latosha Taylor with gas, then setting her house on fire. It happened after a birthday party for one of her children.
