Bibb Schools to Install Carbon-Monoxide Detectors

Bibb County schools will install carbon-monoxide detectors at 22 schools in response to a massive gas leak at an Atlanta-area school.

District spokeswoman Stephanie Hartley said Bibb school officials ordered those detectors this week.

She says they reviewed school safety after hearing of this week's leak at an Atlanta elementary school that sent 42 students and seven adults to hospitals.

She says they identified 22 schools with central boiler rooms where CO could build up.

The detectors would be installed in the main boiler area and shut down a valve when carbon monoxide reaches dangerous levels.
She said the detectors are on order and could be delivered within seven days.

She was not sure of the cost.

But the Associated Press reports that commercially available carbon monoxide alarms designed for homes range in cost from around $13 to more than $100. Atlanta school officials have recently discussed models that cost around $15.

Houston schools spokeswoman Beth McLaughlin says they have no current plans to install the carbon monoxide detectors. She said they have only two schools with central boiler rooms.
