Bibb Schools Pack Up Holiday Spirit For Deployed Troops

Each year, the Bibb chapter of the School Nutrition Association has a service project.

Theresa Cantrell says this year, when they decided to collect items for holiday care packages for troops, they had no idea how big it would get.

"We knew we were going to get a few items back but the response was overwhelming," said Cantrell.

The service project spread from within the School Nutrition Association to about 25 schools across the district.

"The schools have opened it up to where their students donated items their teachers donated items our school nutrition employees donated items so it was been an overwhelming success," she said.

She says they've been collecting for three weeks, and already sent out 9 boxes for Thanksgiving. The packages are sent to servicemen with local ties deployed to Afghanistan and Kuwait.

She estimates when all is said and done, they would have sent out 24 boxes, with enough supplies for a squad of about 10 servicemen.

One of the recipients is the son-in-law of Linda Melton, the media clerk at Heard Elementary school. She says the care package means the world to servicemen and their families who have to spend the holidays apart.

"It's just hard for them over there, not being with their famillies at this time," said Melton. "I think they appreciate it. To know that people are thinking about them."

Cantrell says if they continue receiving items, they will send them to servicemen even if they arrive after the holidays. For more on how to help, you can contact the Bibb School Nutrition association at 779-2612.
