Stratford Academy Student Crowned Bibb's STAR Student

Stratford Academy senior Shruti Gupta is Bibb county's STAR student for 2013.

She received the honor at a banquet at Middle Georgia State College Tuesday night. Gupta was selected from a group of 10 students from private and public high schools who scored the highest on the SAT and whose GPA is in the top 10 percent.

"I'm definitely honored and ecstatic that I got this award and I definitely was not expecting it at all," said Gupta.

Alayna Williams represented Central High school at the banquet.

"I realize there are a lot of intelligent kids around here," she said, "so I'm just really proud to be with them."

Shelby Moll was Central Fellowship Academy's STAR student, Covenant Academy selected Elizabeth McCullers, First Presbyterian Day school had David Priester Jr., Howard High had Joseph Hornung and Rutland High had Tanner Smalling.

"I'm planning on going to UGA next year," said Smalling. "I haven't decided on my major yet, but possibly something involving sports science or kinesiology."

Mount De Sales' Nina Le, Tattnall Square Academy's William Jackson and Windsor Academy's Jessica Etheridge rounded out the field of Star students.

Each student nominated a star teacher. Gupta nominated her history teacher Michael Kelley. It's the 10th time he's received the honor.

"When a student says you're the one that's meant the most to them and their educational experience, that's what really keeps you going as a teacher," said Kelley.

Gupta and Kelley will return to Middle Georgia State College in March for the regional STAR awards with a chance to move on to the state level.

The Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce put on the event along with the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. Central Georgia Health Systems and the State Bank and Trust Company sponsored the event alongside Middle Georgia State College.
